Slice of Life #10 - What to Write (Part 1)

I've been saying that I want to push myself and venture out to write some poetry, but there have been so many stories that have come to mind I haven't needed to or maybe I've been easily able to avoid it. I just don't feel as comfortable with this genre - it scares me. I don't do it well, but I guess the only way to get better is to write, write, write - right? Ha ha - I'm a goof! Anyway, I already feel better about this poem than the last one. The last poem I did, slice #5, I read it to my husband, AFTER I had already hit the "Publish" button, he says, "Yoda would be proud." Are you kidding me - I thought to myself. It totally was a Yoda thing to say. How embarrassing my poetry is inspired by Yoda. My dad would be so proud.

So here's another attempt...

What to write...
stories, experiences
weigh on my heart
roll around and around
  in my mind
haunt me like a ghost
follow me like a shadow
tugging at my pantleg
  as a first grader would
  to go out to play
must get out
sigh of relief
paper holds the burden
freeing my mind

  1. Write on Jenn,
You have taken on the poetry medium and made it your own...
    weigh on my heart
    roll around and around
    in my mind
    haunt me like a ghost
    follow me like a shadow
    tugging at my pantleg
    as a first grader would
    to go out to play

    I love the action.
    Inspired by Yoda? My favorite

    1. Thanks - It was in my last poem "Trying to Balance it All" Slice #5 that I realized had a Yoda like feel to it. "Trying...NO do!" How embarrassing.

That really sealed the image for me of how badly your stories want to get out. Look forward to reading more of your poems!

  3. *chuckles*

I'm a Star Wars fangirl, and the fact that you referenced Yoda is what led me to check out your Slice today...

Do, or do not... there is no try. Not very good advice for the fact that he was supposed to be a teacher, right? Maybe it's about having the confidence to just DO... and not second guess yourself.

  4. There are some incredible poets in this writing community, and you have just joined the ranks. We learn by doing and noticing what the others do. Kudos to you for stepping out and pushing yourself. I can't pick which line is the best, they are all so connected and important. Way to go!

    tugging at my pantleg
as a first grader would" Yes, Yoda would be so proud! : )

  7. Jen,
I think you really captured the essense of our struggle here as we "roll words" around until they take shape on the page. For many, in the end, the paper does carry the burden of all we wrestle to put down.

    Inspiring!
